Deliciously decorated cookies that bring whimsical charm to any Halloween gathering.

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (more for desired consistency)
  • Food coloring (green, purple, orange)
  • Sprinkles, edible glitter, or sugar decorations

Instructions

  1. Make the dough: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, mixing until combined. Gradually add the dry ingredients until a dough forms.
  2. Chill the dough: Divide the dough into two portions, wrap them in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least one hour.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  4. Roll out the dough: On a floured surface, roll out one portion of the dough to about ¼-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes such as witches, hats, and broomsticks. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheets.
  5. Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Allow them to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Prepare the icing: In a bowl, mix the powdered sugar and milk until smooth, then divide the icing and add food coloring for desired shades.
  7. Decorate: Once the cookies are completely cool, use the colored icing to decorate them creatively.

Notes

Ensure butter and egg are at room temperature for easier mixing. Don’t skip chilling the dough to maintain cookie shape.
